“The Road”

This is one of the better movies I have seen in a long time, though hard to watch in places.  It was released in 2009 and I was surprised not to have heard of it before watching it as the story and performance by Mortensen is Oscar-worthy.

It takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where the man e with hopes of life being better once they get there and searching for food along the way.

It doesn’t state exactly what happened, but it is inferred that it was world wide nuclear strikes leaving the planet cold and gray where nothing will grow, earthquakes are frequent, the trees that are left dying and small animals have died off and roving gangs resorting to cannibalism to survive.

The man will go to any length, and does, to protect his son while keeping his value of not resorting to cannibalism.   The man, understandably, is fearful of all strangers.  It is his son who is his conscience even questioning “are we still the good guys?”

There are some other small parts with big named stars, such as Charlize Theron that plays the mother  in the flashbacks, Robert Duvall, Guy Pierce and Garrett Dillahunt (from “Raising Hope”) but they, like Mortensen are barley recognizable under all of the grubbiness.

This movie is available to watch on Netflix or might be at your local video store.  It is rated “R” and due to the subject matter I would not recommend it for those under 17, but recommend it for adults.
