I had originally planned to make a Christmas Tree shaped but the rack I used isn’t really wide enough to do that so we ended up with an Ornament mobile to hand over our Charlie Brown Tree.

There was a lot of trial and error, tangled threads, frustration and a few broken ornaments, but here are the basics to make one with things you may have around the house already to do it fairly quickly and easily.

  • Cake cooling rack
  • Ornaments (we used 11)
  • Ornament hangers
  • Thread
  • Packing tape
  • Ribbon
  • Hook to hand from ceiling (I used a Command brand hook)

Attach hook on to ceiling,

Decide how you want the lengths of each to be and the one end of thread around the ornament base and the other end on an ornament hook.

Cut two lengths of ribbon long enough so they can be tied together in the center and tie on each side.    Cut a length of ribbon to tie around the center where the two piece meet and leave open enough to hang on the hook.

When working tape to the edge of table to hang the ornaments.    Start at the center and work out, adding packing tape to secure to the cooling rack (otherwise when you go to hang it up the ornaments may slide to one side and the thread will tangle).
