I was surprised to see this listed on “Roadside America”.  It is a billboard atop Perfection Bakeries near the corner of Main and Ewing (which turns into Wells Street a few blocks north) as we have seen it so often we have even forgotten it was there.

It features perpetual falling bread and has been there for fifty years or more.

Marv recalls when he was very young seeing the sign from his Dad’s hospital room at St. Joseph’s Hospital a few blocks away when he was in for surgery in the late 60’s.   The first time I remember seeing it in 1984 when I moved to Fort Wayne.

In the same building it is atop of they also have an outlet store where you can buy discount bread and other products in their brand.   A lady I used to work with used to refer to it as the “Used Bread” store, which cracked me up and I would tell her if that was the case, you really wouldn’t want to be buying it.

  1. I think it was the early ’60’s, like 1964 and then dad went in for surgery in 1972 and again we saw the ” falling bread” sign.
